USENET News Services To Download Binaries
1. What Are Binaries?
In the context of computers, "binary" refers to the two-digit system of ones and zeros that combine in sets of eight to indicate letters, numbers, formatting, and other values. All digital files are ultimately binary files, but text messages that do not contain formatting are differentiated as simply "plain text."
Binaries then, can be any kind of file including a formatted document, digital photograph, program, audio file, iso image, or movie file, to name a few. So why call them "binaries" and not .exe's, .iso's or the like? When people talk about "downloading binaries" they are referring to files posted to the public, text-based network known as USENET.
USENET began at Duke University in 1979, and is the oldest public bulletin-board style network in existence, predating the Web by a decade. USENET was designed for posting plain text messages in public discussion forums known as newsgroups. Since plain text messages are very small in size compared to binaries, USENET protocol calls for binaries to be posted to their own newsgroups, known as BINARY NEWSGROUPS. Hence the term, "downloading binaries."
People worldwide upload a myriad of files to USENET daily, including original photography and graphics, original programs, freeware of all kinds, publicly distributed betas, Linux distros and so on. Copyrighted materials might also be posted without permission. It is the downloader's responsibility to abide by applicable copyright laws.
