2. How Do I Find Binaries?

USENET, a public, text-based network, hosts over 100,000 forums or newsgroups. Shared files (binaries) can be uploaded to a subset of newsgroups known as BINARY NEWSGROUPS. There are hundreds of binary newsgroups named by topic, each having the word "binaries" in the title. For example, alt.binaries.clip-art is a place you can expect to find binaries of clip-art, while alt.binaries.linux is a place you can expect to find Linux® binaries.

Worldwide, the public uploads many thousands of files to USENET binary newsgroups daily, which in turn can be downloaded by anyone. Binary newsgroups do not rely on reciprocity, so you do not need to upload (share) anything, ever, and can download as many files as you like, as often as you like, from as many groups as you like.

USENET newsgroups reside on news servers. Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) make a news server available to their customers to access USENET newsgroups. The address is typically news.yourisp.com. Unfortunately, ISPs tend to purge binary newsgroups often, so enthusiasts commonly opt for a third-party USENET News service for longer retention times.

A USENET newsreader is required to read, post to, or to download binaries from USENET. While newsreader functionality is built into many email programs, a newsreader designed for downloading binaries, such as NewsLeecher©, is recommended.
